In a 10 week time period, Urban Media Literacy used our media literacy curriculum to increase the ELA reading scores of a group of 40 students.
Most of the students were reading two or more levels below grade on their first assessment. On their second assessment, The group had an overall ELA reading score improvement of 150%. Some students reading scores jumped 3 grade levels in 10 weeks. All the students in the group improved in some area of reading comprehension.
The Story got even better
The group outscored the District averages
on their ELA benchmarks
By incorporating UML's 4 Pillars for Success
into their curriculum these students
became more engaged and took ownership of their education.
They thought they could win, so they won
No one plays in a game they don't think they can win
10 weeks later they were assessed again. Adding UML's 4 Pillars of Success helped the students make significant gains.
The students were required to weekly do lessons on the I-Ready learning platform. My Students showed annual reading progress of 150%
Some students improved 3 reading grade levels in as little as ten weeks
38/40 students showed an increase in reading comprehension skills
My 8th graders out paced the district and region on their state Benchmark Tests
The best time to teach reading skills is BEFORE a child starts kindergarten. It may also save their life. Here's my story
