Lowering Recidivism Rates

Real world skills

There are several reasons why increasing comprehension can potentially lower recidivism rates:

  • Improved Decision-Making:  Better comprehension allows individuals to analyze situations more critically, understand the potential consequences of their actions, and make informed decisions. This can help them avoid risky behaviors that could lead to criminal activity.
  • Reduced Misunderstandings:  Stronger comprehension skills can help people understand laws and legal processes better. This reduces the chances of misunderstandings that might lead to unintentional violations or frustration with the justice system.
  • Enhanced Communication:  Effective communication is key to resolving conflicts and building positive relationships. Improved comprehension allows individuals to express themselves clearly and understand the perspectives of others. This can help them navigate social situations more effectively and avoid conflicts that could lead to criminal activity.
  • Greater Problem-Solving Skills:  Comprehension is essential for problem-solving. When individuals can understand complex situations and analyze available information, they are better equipped to find solutions to challenges they face in life. This can help them address issues like unemployment or lack of housing in a productive way, reducing the likelihood of resorting to crime.
  • Increased Confidence:  Struggling with comprehension can lead to feelings of frustration and helplessness.  Developing stronger comprehension skills can boost an individual's confidence in their abilities and their ability to navigate the world around them. This can empower them to pursue positive opportunities and avoid criminal activity.
  • Improved Educational and Employment Opportunities:  Strong comprehension skills are essential for success in education and employment. Recidivism reduction programs that focus on comprehension can help prepare individuals for reintegration into society by equipping them with the skills needed to secure jobs and further their education.

Here are some additional points to consider:

  • Comprehension goes beyond just reading ability. It also involves critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation of information.
  • Recidivism is a complex issue with many contributing factors. Increasing comprehension is just one piece of the puzzle, but it can be a significant factor in reducing recidivism rates.

Programs like Urban Media Literacy's Comprehension 10-Pack aim to address these issues by specifically focusing on improving critical thinking skills in incarcerated individuals.

What is The Comprehension 10 Pack?

Many students, learners, and returning citizens do not score as well as they can on important tests due to poor comprehension skills. To comprehend simply means to understand. If you cannot understand what a question is asking you, it will be hard to answer it. One of the obstacles to students learning these skills is students lacking interest in the content used to teach the skills. The Comprehension 10 Pack is an online course that uses content and current events that learners like to discuss orally to build reading and writing skills.

The course syllabus is designed to have the students learn fundamental to higher order thinking comprehension skills.  The exercises are easy to understand. The course is composed of 10 sections that are best done in sequence. The assignments can be done at the learner’s pace. When all 10 sections assignments have been completed the learner will receive a certificate of course completion. All the sections can be completed online via Schoology and Vocabulary.com LMS platforms. The course is designed for those who have achieved reading levels above grade 7 or young learners who are advanced.
